Applying to or Changing Your Major to Creative Writing
HOW TO APPLY TO THE CREATIVE WRITING (BFA) PROGRAM
First-year or transfer applicants seeking admittance to the Creative Writing Program at UMF must submit 10-12 pages of their own written work with their UMF application. We recommend including excerpts or samples of your work in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. In addition to this 10-12 page selection of your original creative work, candidates also might consider submitting a short statement about why they want to declare Creative Writing as their major.
HOW TO CHANGE MAJORS TO THE BFA PROGRAM
In order to transfer from other departments or majors at UMF into the Creative Writing Program, the student must apply to the Creative Writing Committee of the Department of Humanities. Applications should include the following materials:
1. A cover sheet containing phone number, address and current major.
2. A current UMF transcript (available from the Registrar).
3. A writing sample from two or more of the following genres: poetry, fiction, nonfiction. Prose should not exceed fifteen pages. Up to
six poems may be included.
4. A one-paragraph assessment of the applicant as a creative writer and why you want to declare Creative Writing as a major.
Please leave the application with Shari Witham, Humanities Department Administrative Assistant, in 209 Roberts.
Deadlines: October 1 (for admission to the program the following spring semester) or February 1 (for admission to the program the following fall semester).
The creative writing faculty normally notifies candidates about admission during pre-registration each semester.
